Recovery Planning Toolkit

This toolkit is for professionals who are tired of surface-level support.

It’s for those who want to work with people, not on them.

And it’s for anyone ready to bring more depth, structure, and impact into their planning process.

Whether you’re a peer mentor, recovery coach, drug and alcohol worker, or clinical practitioner — if you care about making recovery stick, this is for you.

A 2025 IPSOS national survey of the frontline drug and alcohol treatment workforce.

The results are used to inform the implementation of DHSC’s ten-year strategic plan for the drug and alcohol treatment and recovery service (2024-34), which aims to ‘transform and strengthen’ the workforce over the coming decade.

The 10-year strategic plan for the drug and alcohol treatment and recovery workforce has been launched to inform national, local and employer drug and alcohol treatment and recovery workforce planning cycles over the next 10 years. It will support consistency and clarity in workforce planning, development and expansion across the sector and facilitate improved standardisation of workforce education and training.

The strategic plan marks a major milestone in the national drug and alcohol treatment and recovery workforce transformation programme. It will help to build a sustainable, multidisciplinary drug and alcohol treatment and recovery workforce, equipped with the capabilities and capacity to help people to reduce risk and initiate, sustain and strengthen recovery.

The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) is the most commonly used tool to self-assess whether you might be at risk of burnout. To determine the risk of burnout, the MBI explores three components: exhaustion,
depersonalization and personal achievement. While this tool may be useful, it must not be used as a scientific diagnostic technique, regardless of the results. The objective is simply to make you aware that anyone may be at risk of burnout..
