How did the AoR Programme come to life?
The Architecture of Recovery programme is something I have dreamed of for quite a while to put together.
Over the last 20 years, I have worked with thousands of people, accompanying them on their recovery journeys and delivering more than 15.000 hours of individual, group and organisational sessions.
During this time, I came to the realisation that what I have learned in both academic psychology courses and more practical psychotherapy courses, was not actually helping me to support my clients to make significant changes in their lives, that would prove sustainable over a long period of time. All the courses focused mostly on the "what to do", but not much on the "how to do it". I had a lot of knowledge, but very little awareness of how that knowledge can be translated into practice. In looking for answers, I have come across a wide range of competencies and skills frameworks listing all capabilities that could help one to become a great recovery worker. But there was no training or guidance attached to them. And, of course, working in a treatment setting involves way more than just the therapeutic work with the clients. And that part is never taught anywhere either.
In the absence of any useful training out there, I started to build my own learning curriculum that would equip me with the required strategies, tools and insights necessary for effectively supporting my clients on their recovery journeys and making sure that the services in which I worked delivered the best care possible.
My practice started to change significantly. The connection and the impact that I started to have with my clients was improving. My colleagues noticed this and asked what changed… so I ended up taking space in the clinical meetings and creating a peer supervision model to take them through some of the things I have learned and explore how they looked like in practice.
As I moved into management and consultancy roles, I have begun to introduce some of these learnings and tools into the induction and staff training models for each organisation I have collaborated with. The results were tangible every time, from increasing clients retention, to exceeeding services' KPIs and most important - to significant improvements in the feedback we got form the people we were working with.
But, I never quite got the change to put it all together in one package that can be shared with other professionals working with people living with addictions, so they can improve their practice and impact.
I wanted to find a way of handing over a roadmap of sorts. To help the people travelling the path behind me, side-step the pitfalls I have encountered and capitalize on what works.
The Architecture of Recovery programme is designed to do just that.

WHAT DO OUR ALUMNI RECOVERY ARCHITECTS SAY
Duncan, Recovery Worker
"I really enjoyed the course. It was engaging, thought-provoking, and full of valuable content. To start with, my favorite part was the section on the brain and behaviour. It was fascinating and kept me thinking about it long after the session. The way you presented it made it feel so important and relevant, and I found myself completely absorbed. It was a real standout for me and easily one of the highlights of the program."
Heather, Art Therapist
"I truly valued its holistic approach, which integrates a broad understanding of various recovery methods into an essential resource for those working in the addiction field. This is crucial for fostering successful and lasting recovery in treatment centers, as well as for providing essential insights when working with individuals or groups facing addiction challenges. "
David, Lived Experience Lead
"Unlike other training courses I have done I can say that weeks after doing it I can still retain and apply so much of what was said. The variety of topics covered meant it was easy to stay engaged week to week. The resource library was truly immense and incredibly helpful. I wholeheartedly recommend this course to anyone interested in enhancing their practice."
Sharon, Addiction Counsellor
"Your course gave me the ‘why’ to some things I had been aware of before and also informed me of many things that I had not previously considered. I am much more confident in my practice and delivering group sessions. It has given me understanding of research that has been conducted and why certain models have been adapted and utilised. The examples you gave also helped in my understanding as they were easy to understand and brought the topics to life."
Andrea, Social Worker
"The section on addiction and recovery was invaluable. Even though I thought I already had a solid understanding, you really added depth to it, especially with concepts like capital and cause. These parts really stood out to me. After you mentioned the Jellinek curve, I went back to look it up, and it made me reconsider the way I think about recovery models. I’m still exploring different ones to see what resonates most with me, but your insights definitely encouraged me to dig deeper."
Lisa, Trainee Clinical Psychologist
"Thank you so much for allowing me to attend the course. It was extremely beneficial for me in understanding addiction and how our brains operates. The references and research included were invaluable, highlighting the significance of client engagement for effective outcomes. I wholeheartedly recommend this course to anyone interested in enhancing their practice."
Matt, Peer Supporter
"The group facilitation part was particulary strong. I’ve seen how groups can go off track, especially in the early days of treatment when things weren’t always well managed. I’ve been in groups that turned into unproductive or even negative experiences, and I think you really nailed the importance of safety and cohesion in group dynamics. Loved learning more on how to open and close groups. For me, this is such a vital piece, setting boundaries, establishing purpose, and ensuring people leave feeling safe and supported."
Jane, Service Manager
"The section on effectiveness of treatment was excellent. I’ve always believed that there’s no single solution that works for everyone, and your approach really reinforced that idea. It’s such an important reminder that treatment needs to be tailored to the individual and their unique needs, rather than assuming one approach fits all. What really stood out for me is how important is to understand and learn how to measure the impact we have in our service user's live, and how much a service can improve when we do that."
John, Psychotherapist
"It was an wonderful course. A really in depth and reflective experience. I've absolutely appreciated how you fostered an open enviornment of discussion, which made the learning experience even richer. I really enjoyed the discussion around choice. It’s one of those things we think we understand, but the way you explained it made me question so much about how decisions are made and why we do what we do. It really challenged my thinking in the best possible way and was incredibly useful."
